Quote of the Day for 4/23/06

"We have to do two things. One, disqualify the Republicans, and two, provide an alternative. The first part, they've done for us, and the second part, we need to do."

Bobby Kahn, Chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party, quoted in a Washington Post article.

Mr. Kahn has it exactly right when he says that the Democrats need to provide an alternative.

If you take a look at George Bush's approval ratings, I think that clearly, the majority of Americans "get it."  They know and they understand that George Bush and the Republican Party have failed our country.  They have put their own interests above that of the country.

But it won't be enough for the Democrats to run on George Bush's failed record.  Many voters will want to know 'what do you offer me instead?'

The Democrats must lay out their own vision for where they would take the country, if control of either one or both houses of Congress were returned to them, after this year's mid-term elections.

  1. That's true but the problem is that the Democrats are so flumuxed right now they dont know which end is up. The Republicans have given them issues on a silver platter and they've done nothing with it. They need to stop fighting amongst themselves, stop mimicking the Republicans (because allegedly they're suppose to represent a different point of view), choose a direction, a focus, and stick with it.

  2. I think you make a very good point about the Democrats being flumoxed because there's so much for them to talk about.

The country is a mess right now. I have a theory along these lines. I believe the Republicans may have purposefully tried to create "controlled chaos."

Make things so chaotic so that people do become flustered, they don't know which end is up, and they simply can't keep up with all the scandals, abuses of power, etc. by the Republicans.

But I really do believe the Democrats need to lay out their own agenda. I think they need their own version of the GOP's 1995 "Contract With America."

From a policy perspective, I think the Contract With America was bad. It was bad for America.

But strategically, I think it was brilliant, because it allowed the Republicans to essentially say to the American people "this is what we will give you in return for you giving us back control of Congress."

The Republicans were very good at getting their message out, at a time when they did not have the White House Rose Garden as their backdrop. They didn't have the automatic bulley pulpit that comes with the Presidency.

The Democrats don't seem to have learned that lesson, sadly.
