Republican Racism on Display
The extremists in the Republican Party continue to show us who they really are. And the picture isn't pretty at all.
Just this week, right-wing commentator Michelle Malkin referred to Los Angeles, California Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and California's Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante as "Latino supremacists."
Now, right-wing syndicated radio talk show host Neal Boortz has fired his gun on Rep. Cynthia McKinney, the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress from Georgia.
Commenting on Rep. McKinney's hairstyle, Boortz said "She looks like a ghetto slut" and "ghetto trash."
Transcript courtesy of Media Matters for America:
From the March 31 broadcast of Cox Radio Syndication's The Neal Boortz Show, with producer Belinda Skelton and talk radio host Royal Marshall:
BOORTZ: For instance, or for goodness sakes, jump in and I'm gonna say -- I'm gonna start out with something controversial. I saw Cynthia McKinney's new hair-do. Have you seen it, Belinda?
SKELTON: No.
BOORTZ: She looks like a ghetto slut.
-snip-
OK, Now I've seen Cynthia McKinney's new hairstyle. There is just no other way to say this. It's just hideous. She looks like ghetto trash. Get a braider over there ... quick! Nobody with a modicum of self-respect would go around looking like that.

He also said she looked like a welfare drag queen.
Also courtesy of Media Matters:
"I don't blame that cop for stopping her....it looked like a welfare drag queen was trying to sneak into the Longworth House Office Building."

So this is the face of the Republican Party today. Racist at its core. And when they cannot attack you on the issues, they attack you personally.
Let's see how Neal Boortz's coherts in the right-wing blogosphere try to spin this one.

Boortz did not say "whites are superior to all other races", nor does he believe such. Therefore, what he said is not racist.

I recently saw a "separated at birth" photo comparison of Cynthia McKinney on the left and Buckwheat on the right. I was appalled, shocked, disgusted, ashamed, angry, and sick to my stomach!!! How could anyone make such a comparison in this sensitive, warm and fuzzy 21st century?
I think that Mr. Wheat's family should sue immediately. Comparing that cute and entertaining little kid from the 30's to that waste of human flesh in Atlanta was a disgrace.
To the arrogant and unjustly elected Cynthia McKinney...if that had been me you had struck with the cell phone...you would've been prone, cuffed, and hauled away. My complements to the Capitol police for showing amazing restraint. My method of restraint would've been different.

why can't you separate what one person says from a group of people - talk about stereotyping
Comment by proud conservative— 2006/04/04 @ 08:43 PM — (Reply)
And to proud conservative: I was simply making an observance that Republican bloggers seem to have a way of defending the indefensable.
For example, I once asked some conservative bloggers to disavow John McCain's joke that the reason Chelsea Clinton is so ugly is because "Janet Reno is her father."
I've asked them to disavow Michael Savage's comment that the only reason President Clinton survived heart surgery was because "hell was full."
They couldn't seem to bring themselves to do it. And so I was simply observing that they would find a way to defend Boortz's comments.

Tsk, Tsk, Shalana - not true. I disavowed those statements. And you know it.
Furthermore - "ghetto trash" and "ghetto slut" are classist comments, as ghettos are where the lower socio-economic people live. If you assume that those are racist terms then you are the one assuming only people of color live in ghettos.
That makes YOU the racist.
Comment by Cate— 2006/04/26 @ 05:32 PM — (Reply)
shalana racists treat people like they are all the same. sort of what you are doing here.

you know savage doesn't speak for me so I could care less about what he says but if I do will you disavow what louis farrakhan says?

Comment by oif veteran — 2006/04/26 @ 05:42 PM — (Reply)
So are you saying that just because Savage "doesn't speak for you" means you don't need to speak out against his comments?
And in order for me to respond to your comment about Farrakhan, I need to know what specific comment or quote from him you are referring to.
There are a lot of things he says that I agree with;and a lot I don't agree with. I can't respond to generalizations, though.
Comment by SMillard— 2006/04/26 @ 06:37 PM — (Reply)
neither can we respond to a half story from some liberal diatribe about somebody we don't even listen to
Comment by — 2006/04/26 @ 08:10 PM — (Reply)
so do you think like Farrakhan there is a big UFO in the sky waiting to pick him up?
Comment by — 2006/04/26 @ 08:11 PM — (Reply)
Racism is what I'm trying to fight in today's society.
Moreover, I disagree with your comment that "ghetto trash" and "ghetto trash" are more classist terms.
By and large, the terms "ghetto trash" and "ghetto slut" are used to describe African-Americans.
I have never heard a poor white person referred to as a "ghetto slut."
They might be referred to as "white trash" but not "ghetto trash" or "ghetto slut."
Comment by SMillard— 2006/04/26 @ 06:54 PM — (Reply)
Secondly, while I don't know you well enough to call you a racist - it is worth noting that you made a point of trying to hurt my feelings with the epithet "white trash". No matter who actually said it, you relayed it with malicious intent. That hardly qualifies you for sainthood on the race issue.
Comment by Cate— 2006/04/26 @ 07:16 PM — (Reply)
But really, there are some things that are just common knowledge in society, and that is one of them. You don't have to hang around people who use those terms, to know that there are people who exist who DO use them.
Secondly, when I made the "white trash" comment, I only did it to illustrate a point. If you remember, one of the conservative bloggers on BlogHi (probably the one who runs Regressive Minds) made a post in which they depicted me as a monkey. And I commented that it was a very racist thing to do, to depict me, an African-American, as a monkey.
You responded by basically telling me to get over it; who knew I was African-American? And I said that I made it clear in plenty of my posts on hear, that I am a proud African-American.
Since you disreguarded the racial implications of depicting an African-American as a monkey, I was trying to get you to think about how you would feel, if someone called you white trash.
Comment by SMillard— 2006/04/26 @ 07:34 PM — (Reply)
but you drew the inference it was not explicit in the monkey post..I found it and the author refers to your mental acumen not your race
so you are still the one who brought up the race issue not the author of that post nor Cate
Comment by oif veteran— 2006/04/26 @ 07:51 PM — (Reply)
It was clearly intended to be racial. If you noticed, there are other posts on there where they have put up pictures of large, obsese African-American women with their behinds exposed, that they are portraying me as.
Comment by SMillard— 2006/04/26 @ 07:58 PM — (Reply)
I don't think you know what his intentions are and pretending to know what is in someone's heart is way beyond the pale and I think if he meant it to be racial that person could have put a lot worse things up than that...so like most liberals would say to conservatives if you don't like something don't watch it, buy it or look at it
Comment by oif veteran— 2006/04/26 @ 08:07 PM — (Reply)
obese women does not make a racist and from what I have read the author (s) has made it clear that you are a euphemism for what is wrong with liberals and you've been told you are a shining example
Comment by oif veteran— 2006/04/26 @ 08:09 PM — (Reply)
Shalana, you can excuse your behavior if you wish but the truth is simply that you don't get others to think by calling them names. And you know that.
The original posts are clear - your intent is clear. And, to be honest, it doesn't bother me to be called "white trash" or almost any name in the book because I consider that a reflection of the person addressing me. If someone is unable to express their views without resorting to malicious personal attacks and stereotyping, then they are in dire need of either a dictionary or a cold shower. Especially when you have such liberty in online conversations to consider what you are trying to say before you hit send.
Which is the very reason that I am more than willing to shake a finger at anyone on any side of the aisle who calls names rather than addressing issues.
Comment by Cate— 2006/04/26 @ 08:31 PM — (Reply)
By the way, if you are wondering why I just banned you from this blog, it' because you clearly have misrepresented who you are.
In one of your first comments on this blog (about the generals criticizing Rumsfeld) you said "by the way I'm a Democrat."
Yet, you clearly have misrepresented who you are in your subsequent posts by constantly bashing "liberals."
At least have the decency, honesty and courage to say "I'm a conservative Republican" if that's how you really feel.
But don't misrepresent who you are.
Comment by SMillard— 2006/04/26 @ 08:39 PM — (Reply)
you liberal democrats think you own the party - you yourself have said that we are not monolithic so why can't I as a moderate Democrat disagree with a liberal democrat...
Comment by oifveteran— 2006/04/26 @ 10:06 PM — (Reply)
As a matter of fact, I left the Democratic party in January of last year.
I left the party after Congress met to certify the results of the Presidential election.
I was so discouraged that only ONE Senator had the courage and conviction to sign on to the House's objection of the certification of the Ohio electors, after what happened in Ohio in 2004.
So for the record, I am a registered Independent.
Comment by SMillard— 2006/04/27 @ 06:16 PM — (Reply)
but I have done some reading and you have said you are proud to be a liberal...so which is it?
Comment by oifveteran— 2006/04/27 @ 06:25 PM — (Reply)
I am not a registered Democrat.
Comment by SMillard— 2006/04/27 @ 06:45 PM — (Reply)
I didn't call you a liberal democrat I called you a liberal
Comment by oifveteran— 2006/04/27 @ 06:59 PM — (Reply)
If you no longer believe in the values of the Democratic Party, why are you still a Democrat?
You remind me of former Senator Zell Miller.
In 2004, right after he spoke at the Republican Convention to endorse Idiot Son, he was interviewed by Judy Woodruff.
And Judy asked him why he was still a Democrat? If he really disagreed with his party so much, why did he remain a Democrat?
And he said he would remain a Democrat til the day he died, so when he goes to the "pearly gates" (his words, not mine) he could tell his parents he remained a Democrat all his life.
And I was like, WTF? Your allegience shouldn't be to a party. It should be to your values. Which is why I left the Dems last year.
However, you and other Republicans seem to think that throwing the word "liberal" around is like saying a four-letter word. You and your fellow conservatives have tried to turn "liberal" into some dirty word.
To which I would offer you the words of John F. Kennedy on what it means to be a liberal:
"What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then … we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."
- John F. Kennedy, September 14, 1960

oh so you are a liberal and so you stand out in left field!

Yet you want to turn this into a liberals are bad thread, because you are not willing to discuss your fellow facist Republican's racism.
Typical.
Comment by SMillard— 2006/04/27 @ 07:55 PM — (Reply)
the only thing I have called you is a liberal, a name I THOUGHT you were proud of and now I am an idiot? I don't get it? I might disagree but I didn't call you a name

It's typical conservative M.O. that I've seen on bloghi. Like your fellow conservative bloggers who don't want to talk about the increasing poverty rate or the increasing number of hungry children in the U.S. So they try to change the subject to abortion.
